Families and Community

Building Relationships

It’s important that my families feel a sense of partnership with the school and our classroom.  Throughout the year I provide many opportunities for families to participate in our classroom learning.

Mystery Reader

At the beginning of each year I send home an invitation to my families along with “clues” to send back to me.   We choose a date and time and then the fun begins.  Each day throughout the week I reveal a few clues to the class about our Mystery Reader.  The excitement grows with each day as the children are sure it is their family member.  Once the mystery reader is revealed we then ask questions about the clues they gave, and learn a little more about our families and their backgrounds.

The children love hearing a favorite book their family member chose to share with the class!

Community in the Classroom

Students should always know that learning goes beyond our classroom.  I want them to see that they are a member of the community and what they are learning today will impact their future.

I invited the Academy of Modern Music in one day and the students had so much fun “playing” and experimenting with the instruments.

Here a local musician shares his talent of writing and playing music for the children.

One day even Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett stopped in to share his love for reading! Mayor Triplett really got into it, and the students loved that he wore the Cat in the Hat’s hat.

Here Sanford Police Chief , Cecil Smith, came for a visit to talk with us about safety,  and share with us some of the gadgets tools they use to do their jobs.

And then McGruff the crime dog came barking at our door.

But the real surprise was when they brought the canine cops for a demonstration!
